Who are they?
There are three main Government sponsored bodies:
Sport England
Sport England is responsible for promoting and investing in sport by distributing both Lottery and Exchequer funds to sport:
- Working hard to make England more active and encourages people to get involved with sport and physical activity
- Distributing funding and invests in a range of sporting projects, including the Active England fund
- Influencing decision makers and public opinion on sport.

UK Sport
UK Sport is responsible for creating a strategy for the development of high performance sport in the UK. It is also a Lottery Sports Fund distributor through its World Class Performance and World Class Events programmes.
Its main purposes are:
- Delivering World Class Performance
UK Sport targets its resources at those athletes capable of delivering medal winning performance at the highest level of competition.
- Increasing Worldwide Impact
UK Sport is responsible for developing the UK’s sporting influence internationally through bidding for and hosting major events; ensuring that the UK’s most able administrators have a say in the future direction of sport; and helping to grow sport in developing countries.
- Ensuring World Class Standards
UK Sport promotes the highest standards of sporting conduct whilst continuing to lead a world-class anti-doping programme for the UK.
It is also responsible for improving the education and promotion of ethically fair and drug-free sport.

Football Licensing Authority (FLA)
The FLA is an independent public body set up under the Football Spectators Act 1989 and funded by the DCMS.
Its main functions are to licence league and international football grounds in England and Wales and to oversee the control of safety at these grounds by local authorities.
Its objectives are to ensure the reasonable safety and management of spectators through:
- all-seated grounds in the Premier League and first division of the Football League
- safe standing terraces at other grounds
- clubs taking full responsibility for safety
- reasonable requirements by local authorities
