construction projects

We work with the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) to oversee construction for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This includes the construction of venues, accommodation, infrastructure and transport. Two-thirds of the London 2012  venues  will be existing sporting venues and some are temporary venues which will be dismantled after the Games. The remaining venues, such as the Olympic Stadium, are newly built and will continue to be used after the Games.

The first completed venue was Weymouth and Portland in 2008 which will host sailing events. The second venue to be completed was the Lee Valley White Water Centre, which will host the Canoe Slalom competition during the London 2012 Olympic Games. In February 2011 the Velodrome was the first sporting venue on the Olympic Park to be completed.

In summer 2011, construction of the other main venues in the Olympic Park were completed and these are now being prepared for next summer’s games.

Completed Olympic Park venues:

The construction project on the Olympic Park has:

  • Transformed a former industrial area into a great new park
  • Created a new network of roads, bridges and infrastructure for the Games and legacy
  • Maximised the employment legacy with programmes helping more than 1,200 previously unemployed local people gain work on the Olympic Park
  • Trained more than 3,000 people for work on the Olympic Park and other construction sites
  • Enabled 408 apprentices to work on the project

In addition, the building programme will:

  • Showcase our commitment to low carbon development and sustainable waste management
  • Revitalise the Lower Lea Valley
  • Create one of the largest parks in Europe for 150 years
  • Reinvigorate the waterways
  • Enhance biodiversity
