Appointment of up to 6 Trustees The V&A would like to invite applications for Trustee appointments.

Time Commitment:
6 meetings per year; attendance at sub committees meetings as required; additional time to study papers and attend events at the Museum. On average, Trustees are expected to spend 1-2 days per month on V&A business.

Remuneration
The posts are unpaid but reasonable expenses are paid.

Duration of Appointment
Terms of up to five years are allowed, and appointments of two to five years’ duration are currently the norm. Terms may be renewed subject to an assessment of contribution by the Chairman.

Type of Appointment
These appointments are made by the Prime Minister on the recommendation of Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

Background

Mission
As the world’s leading museum of art and design, the V&A enriches people’s lives by promoting the practice of design and increasing knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of the designed world.

Objectives

  • Access and audiences: to provide optimum access to collections and services for diverse audiences, now and in the future.
  • National and international: to be acknowledged and respected as the world’s leading museum of art and design.
  • Creative design: to promote, support and develop the UK creative economy by inspiring designers and makers and by stimulating enjoyment and appreciation of design.
  • Efficiency and effectiveness: to operate with financial and organisational efficiency.

Trustees also have certain duties under the National Heritage Act 1983 including the care, preservation and development of the collections.

The role
Trustees are statutorily responsible for the custody of the V&A collections and the overall management of the Museum, under the terms of the National Heritage Act 1983. The main functions of the Board are:

  • To care for, preserve and add to the objects in the collections
  • To secure that the objects are exhibited to the public
  • To secure that the objects are available to persons seeking to inspect them in connection with study or research
  • To generally promote the public’s enjoyment and understanding of art, craft and design both by means of the Board’s collections and by such means as they consider appropriate
  • To appoint the Director, with the approval of the Prime Minister

In addition to these statutory duties, the Trustees’ play a central role in devising corporate strategies and priorities.
 
The person

Essential Criteria
Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate:

  • An understanding of and commitment to the objectives and work of the V&A
  • The ability to work constructively with other Trustees and senior management of the V&A
  • Excellent communications and representational skills.

Additional Essential Criteria
In Addition to these core criteria, candidates will bring knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Practitioners in the Creative Industries, particularly in the design, architecture or performing arts fields.
  • Significant business experience (in private or public sectors)
  • Strategic planning
  • Understanding of international strategy
  • Fundraising
  • Property and construction
