Time Commitment

National Museums Liverpool
National Museums Liverpool (NML) is the largest cultural sector employer in the North West of England; it is the only national museum service in England based wholly outside of London and is the only English national museum with universal collections.  It has charitable status and its collections are placed in the care of a Board of Trustees.

The Role
The main responsibilities of the Chair of the NML are to:

  • Provide leadership and focus for the Board, ensuring it meets its financial  and statutory obligations; and to maintain a balanced, diverse and  supportive Board.

  • Work closely with the Director to develop the vision and strategies of NML,  and to provide appropriate support to the Executive Team in delivering  agreed priorities to appropriate standards, on time and within budget. 

  • Promote and champion NML, building and strengthening public  understanding of its potential, and articulating the need for fresh investment  from both public and private sources. 

  • Monitor performance and ensure that Government’s expectations are  understood and met, that NML achieves its goals and has the professional  capacity to support the sector and its stakeholders.

  • Oversee and assess the performance of the Director and the Executive Team,  attending as necessary to their diversity, recruitment, professional  development and remuneration.  

  • Represent NML’s interest at regional, national and international level (as  appropriate) and to work effectively with local and central Government  (including Ministers).


The Person
The successful candidate for this post shall be able to demonstrate:

  • Commitment to the objectives of NML, Liverpool, and the region. 

  • Ability to understand and promote NML’s achievements and potential, in  particular, a commitment to broadening access to cultural opportunities and  to promoting the social and educational value of museums.

  • A proven track record of strong leadership and effective decision-making at a  senior level.  

  • Ability to act as a credible ambassador for NML, Liverpool and the region.

  • Understanding the importance of Liverpool’s role as European Capital of  Culture, & a commitment to delivering a sustainable legacy from the  opportunities the year presents.

  • Excellent communication skills, and the ability to work well with a wide range  of stakeholders.

  • A genuine commitment to diversity.

  • A clear understanding of the respective roles of the Chair and the Director  within a NDPB, and the ability to provide appropriate challenge and support  to the Executive team.

  • Good experience of public and private sectors, and experience of fundraising  from both sectors. 

  • Respect for and commitment to public service values.

Supporting information:

Location of Meetings
NML is based in Liverpool and Board meetings take place in Liverpool, although the Chair will be required to travel to occasional meetings in other locations across England including London.

Term of Appointment
The appointment will be for 4 years from Summer 2008.

Remuneration
The NML Chair and Trustees give their services on an honorary basis but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
