Time Commitment
3 Committee meetings a year (approximately 2 hours per meeting).  Additional time is required to see works of art, exhibitions and ad hoc advice on acquisitions and related matters.

The Government Art Collection
The Government Art Collection (GAC) is unique in its combination of a wide-ranging and growing collection of British art (over 13,000 works from the 16th century to the present day) and their display in Government buildings in the UK and around the world.   

In so doing, the GAC promotes British art, history and culture to the many thousands of visitors to these buildings, and enhances the working environment

The Advisory Committee’s Role
Committee members advise on:

  • The purchase and commission of works of art in order to meet the GAC  objective of promoting British art, history and culture in major Government  buildings in the UK, including Regional government buildings and around the  world.  
  • Matters regarding stewardship of the GAC in order to meet the objectives of  GAC and DCMS.

The Person
The successful candidate for this post shall be able to demonstrate

  • A good working knowledge of the British art market, auctions and gallery  dealers, exhibition spaces and artists’ studios and related matters.
  • Ability to effectively contribute to the development of the GAC acquisitions  policy.     
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively.

Specific Expertise for this post

  • A broad knowledge of British Art with an emphasis on 20th century and  Contemporary art.

At the premises of the Government Art Collection in Central London.

Term of Appointment
The appointment will be for 4 years from Autumn 2008.

Remuneration
Advisory Committee members give their services on an honorary basis. Travel and any other relevant expenses will be reimbursed.
